Nationally, the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon are known for being balanced. Here at SMU, we are not only known for that, but we are also known as men of character—true gentlemen. There is a focus on academics, but we also know how to enjoy the rest of our time. Last year, our social events included an away weekend to Austin, Texas, several theme parties, mixers, date dashes, and philanthropy events with the sororities on campus. This year's theme parties included Nautical Naughtiness and Blackout.
When it comes to new members, we do not pick one type of personality. At SigEp we respect who you are, and we do not try to mold you into one person. We embrace individuality, but we are brothers held together by our common values and beliefs. In that respect we are different—SigEp different.
Our brothers are studying everything from business to pre-medicine to engineering to the arts. A great deal of brothers continually make the Honor Roll, and we consistently have one of the top fraternity GPA’s on campus. This past semester we became the fraternity with the highest GPA at 3.464 and the Greek organization with the second highest GPA on campus, only a few points behind the Delta Delta Delta sorority.
We are also leaders in many areas on campus. From the Residence Halls to Student Senate to campus ministries to SMU-spirit organizations, SigEp has them all. We are Eagle scouts, black belts, radio show hosts, and United States Marines. We are AARO Leaders, Mustang Corral Leaders, and even campus tour guides. (Full List)
Last year both our indoor and outdoor soccer seasons ended on a high note. In both leagues we clinched the number one spot as champions with contributions from several members. With their efforts and other brothers who competed in intramurals we finished at the top of the Greek league and won the Greek league overall championship for the first time in our chapter's history! We have brothers who run, wrestle, play soccer, basketball, football, baseball, golf, and more.
One of the more rewarding events that we did last year was the annual Chi Omega-Sigma Phi Epsilon Philanthropy benefiting the Make-A-Wish® Foundation. Together, we raised over $20,000, and hopefully this year will be even better! In addition, we also helped raise money and actively participated in Relay for Life this past spring.
Each year, we compete in the fall Family Weekend Talent Show and the spring Sing-Song competition at SMU. Many fraternities and sororities compete for these highly coveted honors. In 2009 we took home several awards including best male lead and choreographer in the Sing-Song competition with Pi Beta Phi but finished in second place. This past year we teamed up with Pi Beta Phi once again but this time took home the first place trophy, sweeping the board in several different awards.
At SigEp, we have a zero tolerance policy towards hazing. We do not have pledging; instead, we try to develop a sound mind and sound body through four years of membership development. Our program--the Balanced Man Program--is the first of its kind. We've come to believe that being in a fraternity is more than just a party; rather, it's about learning how to live your very best life.
